What separates a pass from a “Yes, let’s make this movie!”? Here’s a quick checklist to help you get your Christmas script seen.
Producers get hundreds of scripts—and they know what works. Here’s a checklist used by savvy writers to give their Christmas movie script a real shot.
1. Keep it Castable: 6 Speaking Roles
Producers live by budgets, so likewise, you must too! The sweet spot for almost every Christmas TV movie is no more than 6 actors with speaking parts. This includes even the smallest roles (sometimes called “under-fives”). Every new actor is added cost, so challenge yourself: can you combine roles, or cleverly double up parts? This creative constraint will make your story more marketable.
2. Master of (Very Few) Locations

3. Every Page, Producer-Friendly
Write with producers in mind. Ask yourself:
- Is there anything here that will drive up the cost for no reason?
- Can a fun scene be rewritten to work in an existing location or use existing props?
- Are all the roles necessary for the story, or can some be merged?
Producers want to see not just Christmas “spirit” but script discipline.
4. The Polished Query Letter

- Keep queries under 25 seconds to read.
- Highlight the hook—why this story stands out.
- Proofread! (Every typo lowers your chances.)
- Be direct: say who you are, the title/genre, and your unique Christmas angle.
5. Networking Beyond the Screen
- Don’t wait for scripts to sell themselves.
- Target key festivals and markets: AFM (American Film Market—now in Las Vegas!), Whistler Film Festival (especially for Canadians!), and holiday-specific events like Christmas Con.
- Enter respected contests (vet them first): Placing can attract agents and producers fast.
- Use InkTip and similar professional platforms—producers often source scripts here, and it gives you valuable insight into what buyers want, right now.
6. Realistic Industry Mindset
To get your script seen – understand that:
- Your rep (agent/manager) can’t work miracles—you will always need to personally network and pitch.
- The Christmas movie market is contracting; therefore, quality trumps quantity. Studios may produce fewer films, but they still pick up the best scripts.
- Most writers make their real money on write-for-hire gigs, not sales. Thus you should network accordingly to find those jobs.
7. Protect Your Passion (and Avoid Burnout)
You can’t rush great scripts, and you shouldn’t write them alone.
- Join (small!) writers groups: Four people max. Big groups = less feedback per member.
- Track your time and set boundaries to keep your creativity fresh.
- Let your own hobby, craft, or seasonal joy feed your writing—audiences sense the authenticity.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
Each checklist item reveals the real, behind-the-scenes reasons producers choose one Christmas script over another. In addition, studios may produce fewer films, but they still pick up the best scripts. Follow these steps to increase your chances of standing out—and landing a “Yes.”
